Press Release June 2008

More than 1,200 garden enthusiasts braved the strong winds to visit 16 private gardens in Mellor Open Gardens 2008 - a wonderful testament to the resilience and spirit of garden lovers and gardeners. This community event was only possible through the skill and generosity of garden owners and the time and dedication of numerous volunteers. A sum of £11,820 was raised for the benefit, equally, of Cancer Research UK and the Mellor Parish Centre.
Sue Beesley, winner of the BBC Gardener of the Year competition in 2006, joined us for the day and visited every garden. She concluded her blog entry:
"So congratulations Mellor for a superb event, for showing what modern communities can achieve, for opening your gardens and for some seriously impressive fundraising. And thank you for the invitation to come and share it with you."
Peter Oldham, speaking for the Organisers, commented:
“We have to thank everyone who contributed, often unseen, to the success of Mellor Open gardens 2008. However, the stars of the day were the hard-working and hospitable garden-owners, who kindly allowed so many of us the privilege of visiting their beautiful gardens. We are indebted to them and to the hundreds of people who spent a wonderful but windy day in Mellor.”
